FOR THE LOVE OF LAWN
TIPs, Tricks & Curiosities for A lovely lawn
Does this look familiar?? One of the most common nightmares of a home owner during any wet season is Drainage failure. Drainage is a problem that has to be taken care of during the construction of the house. It can be a relatively simple problem that can be solved if the house has a planned sewage system, but it can become very expensive very quickly if it has to be done after the the damage has been done. Generally, to avoid a water logged lawn and foundation issues, PVC pipe can be laid underground to aid in routing water in a specific way and gutter spouts and keep the snow melt and rainwater away from the house. Just know that improper management of drainage systems can lead to foundation issues, water traps and depressions in your lawn, kill grass and plants, and so on....
If it is a rather lower scale standing water in your grass consider not trying to beat it but enhance the problem by creating a well landscaped pond. This could turn into a gorgeous feature that then eliminates the issue of three inches of water standing in the grass that can often times kill it or keep it thin. Ponds are often a focal point of landscape design that many people will find hard to overlook. Another idea with standing water is to collected it. This can be very environmentally and budget friendly to use this "free" water for your garden or outdoor use later. If you truly want to live off the land, you can even go further with collecting the standing water through underground drainage pipes and properly treat and filter it so you can use it for household purposes as well (but have it tested before if you are thinking about drinking it). Either way, just don't allow that snow melt or spring torrential rains to stay standing in your lawn or around your home or you will end up pulling your hair out with all the other complications that will come with it. In this case, prevention is as good as gold.
